Dr Richard Mycroft

Senior Lecturer & Admissions Tutor - School of Mathematics

“Our School welcomes many international students from regions across the world including Europe, India, China, Hong Kong and many more. Below we have provided some useful information for applicants, including what to expect during your first year, and some first-hand experiences from our current Mathematics students.”

Your first year at Birmingham

Your first year as a Mathematics student at the University of Birmingham will be an interesting and exciting time full of new experiences and challenges.

Here are a few of the highlights you can expect from your first year:

  • Excellent support - When you join us you will be assigned a personal tutor, whose role is to provide academic support throughout your studies. For the first two years of your degree you will meet your tutor for weekly tutorials as part of a small group of tutees (typically of 6-8 students) to complement and enhance your learning experience.
  • We have a very active Mathematics Society (MathSoc) who organise social and sports activities, educational and career events, as well as a successful volunteering scheme so you can make the most of university life. They also offer a 'Family Scheme' to help new students settle into the department and get to know people.
  • A thriving community - the School of Mathematics is a sociable and inclusive community of learners. In addition to events run by MathSoc, the School organises numerous informal events to develop and sustain a friendly atmosphere, and to help students get to know more of the staff and fellow students.

Hear from our international community

One of the best ways to find out what life is really like as an international Mathematics student is to hear from them! Here, they talk about their experiences and give real insight into student life at Birmingham.
