I am a part time, distance learning PhD student. My PhD project is about the debate in philosophy of time that followed McTaggart’s argument against the reality of time considered from a later-Wittgenstenian perspective.
McTaggart’s argument has been of seminal importance in philosophy of time amongst a good number of philosophers in the English-speaking world. Amongst the features of such legacy there seem to be the characterisation of time along the A and B series, the conviction that events are items in the universe, the idea that A and B characteristics are properties of or relations between such items, and the correlated idea that one set of set characteristics events possess (B characteristics) is eternally possessed by them, while the other characteristics (A characteristics) events posses, change. Though in his later work Wittgenstein does not expound a philosophy of time or analyse systematically the notion, there are a number of entries in his later work where he refers to time, to issues related to time and to the use of language related to it. In my work I consider some of these entries as well as some implications of Wittgenstein’s approach to language on philosophy of time, particularly on debates that occurred in wake of McTaggart’s argument.
