About

Simon Teasdale is a research fellow at the ESRC / Office for Civil Society / Barrow Cadbury Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC). Within TSRC Simon is primarily involved with a stream of work exploring the distinctive (or otherwise) contribution of social enterprise.

Biography

After graduating from the University of Manchester in 2006, Simon worked as a researcher at the Institute for Volunteering Research, and as a part time lecturer at the University of East London. In 2008 he moved to the national charity for single homeless people, Crisis, where he was responsible for managing a small research team. He started at TSRC in 2009, and has since published articles in journals such as Economy and Society, Housing Studies, Public Money and Management, and Public Policy and Administration.. Simon won the best paper award at the Public Administration Committee 2010 conference for his paper “What’s in a name: the construction of social enterprise.

Research

Simon works on the social enterprise stream within the TSRC. Working papers from this stream can be accessed at www.tsrc.ac.uk . His recent research has included a review of large scale data sets pertaining to social enterprise; a project examining how social enterprises in the homelessness field balance social and economic objectives; and a longitudinal comparative study (with Janelle Kerlin at Georgia State University) examining charities reliance on earned income in England and the United States. He is also involved with Real Times – a longitudinal qualitative study exploring how third sector organisations respond to change.

Other activities

Simon is the associate editor of Social Enterprise Journal. He is a member of the Social Policy Association and British Sociological Association. He is organising the 2012 International Social Innovation Research Conference (to be held at the University of Birmingham), and has recently been awarded an ESRC Seminar Series Award (with Alex Nicholls, Pascal Dey and Mike Bull) which will develop an international network of researchers interested in applying critical perspectives to the understanding of social enterprise.
