Dr Liam Anderson is an applied exercise physiologist. He has a particular interest in intermittent sports with over a decade of experience working as an applied practitioner in elite football. Liam’s research is focused around maximizing performance and developing strategies to help better prepare players for competition.

Biography

Liam completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Liverpool John Moores University, which included an internship at Everton FC working with their 1st team and academy. This was the start of his journey within the applied setting, and he later went on to become a sports scientist at Liverpool FC while investigating the training load, energy expenditure and intakes of the 1st team squad as part of his PhD thesis. Liam then went onto leading performance departments both overseas at Mol Fehervar FC (Hungary) and domestically at Crewe Alexandra FC. Liam has now returned to work in academia and is supervising others in professional sport settings.

Postgraduate supervision

Liam has several current doctoral supervisions who are all embedded within elite professional football, in addition to a number of Masters students within the University. Typically, Liam’s PhD vacancies are advertised via his Twitter or LinkedIn account.

Research

Liam’s current research interests are centered around sport performance and how it can be examined and improved through various strategies. He is also interested in research that looks to understand the performance environment within elite sporting organizations with the overall aim being the to develop processes to further improve performance support.

Other activities

Liam is BASES accredited sports scientist, supervisor, and a UEFA licensed football coach. He regularly reviews journal articles related to exercise physiology and performance sport (e.g., Journal of Sports Sciences, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, European Journal of Sports Sciences). In addition to these academic roles, he is also a consultant for clubs in the English Premier League and English Football league.
