Here are some of the most common questions and some helpful answers. Coronavirus (COVID-19) What is the Birmingham International Summer School's response to the COVID-19 situation? Due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, it is with regret that we announce that the Birmingham International Summer School (BISS) 2020 has been cancelled. This decision has been difficult and we understand that this is disappointing news, but the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students remains our priority. We are already making plans and looking forward to launching BISS 2021 and information on next year’s programmes will be available on our website from September 2020. We look forward to welcoming interested students next summer! We advise you to refer to the BISS Terms & Conditions for information concerning refund and cancellation policies. The Application Process Who can apply for BISS? To be accepted onto BISS, you must be over 18 and studying an undergraduate programme at a University outside the UK or be registered as an International student at a UK university. You must be of good academic standing and meet the BISS English Language requirements, as well as subject specific requirements if applicable. For more information, see the Entry Requirements page. Please check the Programmes page for more information about subject specific requirements. How do I apply? Applications for BISS 2020 are now closed. When is the application deadline? The final application deadline is 19 April 2020. In order to receive the early application discount, students must apply before 1 March 2020. When will I hear from you about my application? Students will receive an email confirming that their application has been received by the University. All applications are processed by the University Admissions Office, who will aim to inform you of the outcome within two weeks. Please note that applications without an academic transcript or university certificate of attendance will not be considered. Fees How much is the BISS fee? The BISS fee is £2,750. Please see our Fees page to find out whether you are eligible for a discount. What is included in the BISS fee? The fee includes tuition and assessment, self-catering accommodation in University halls of residence and a programme of social events. Can I get a discount? For information on discounts, please see the list on our Fees page. When is the payment deadline? All BISS payments must be submitted in full by 3 May 2020. Credits Will I receive credits for the programme?Yes, each programme is equivalent to an accredited undergraduate course: 20 UK credits, 5 US credits, or 10 ECTS. When will I receive the credits?Students will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the three week programme during the BISS awards ceremony. An official transcript will be sent out to students between October and November 2020. Visas Which visa should I apply for? You should apply for a Short Term Study Visa. How do I apply for my visa? The University Admissions Office will provide you with a letter to use for your visa application once the conditions of your offer have been completed. For more information, please see our Visa information and advice page. Preparing for BISS Will accommodation and catering be provided? Self-catered accommodation is provided as part of the BISS fee. When should I arrive in the UK? The allocated arrival day for BISS students is Sunday 19 July 2020. Information will be sent out to all students with further instructions. Will an airport pickup be provided? An airport pickup may be available to students travelling to Birmingham International Airport during an allocated time on the arrival day, Sunday 19 July. An email will be sent out to students with further details prior to BISS 2020. When can I register with the University of Birmingham? An email will be sent to all students detailing the registration process. For more information, please see our Pre-arrival Information page. Cancellation Can I cancel my application? For information about cancellation and for all BISS terms and conditions, please see the Terms & Conditions page. Transcripts Will I receive an official transcript for BISS? Students who have successfully completed the BISS programme will receive an official academic transcript by the November following the Summer School period. The transcript will be posted to the correspondence address provided in the student's BISS application form. What if my transcript has not arrived? Students who have not received their academic transcript by the end of the November following the Summer School period are advised to request a copy using Verify.
