Alumni Reception - Chicago

Location
Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront
Dates
Thursday 11 April 2019 (18:30-20:30)
Join us on Thursday 11 April for an evening of inspirational talks by some of our top academics followed by a networking reception where you will have the opportunity to connect with your fellow Birmingham alumni living in the US.

After a warm welcome from Professor Tim Softley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor – Research and Knowledge, three Birmingham academics will take to the stage to give a short, informal talk on their latest research. Following this you will have the opportunity to network with other Illinois based alumni over drinks and canapes.

On the night you will hear insights from:

  • Dr Finola Kerrigan, will speak about her recent publication in the Journal of Consumer Research; License to Assemble: Theorizing Brand Longevity.  This study uses the long running James Bond film franchise to develop a theory of brand longevity.
  • Professor Jack Grieve, will discuss how corpus linguistics can be used to describe how Donald Trump's tweeting style changed over time, especially during the 2016 election. He will show that there are clear shifts in style at key points in the campaign, suggesting that there was an underlying strategy behind how Twitter was used by Trump and his team.
  • Professor Francis Pope will talk about his global work on air pollution, which covers four continents, including UK, USA, East Africa and India. In particular, he will discuss the www.asap-eastafrica.com project which is looking at a systems based approach to understanding air pollution in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

We hope you can join us at the Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront, 71 East Upper Wacker Drive, Chicago at 6.30pm.
