UoB Alumni Book Club: The Bass Rock

Dates
Thursday 28 May 2020 (13:30-14:30)

Our next selection is chosen from Dr Ruth Gilligan:

'To complement Virginia Woolf, I have chosen a novel by Evie Wyld, one of the finest female voices in contemporary British fiction. The Bass Rock tells the intertwining stories of three different women from three different time periods, all set in the same rugged location on the Scottish coast. It is a novel about sisterhood and violence and female identity; it is also the best novel I have read since lockdown began. I can't wait to discuss its eerie atmosphere, its complex characters and its elegant structure with you all.'

To find out more about Dr Gilligan, check out this special lockdown video, where Ruth chats about her latest novel, The Butchers, set in rural Ireland during the 1996 BSE disease outbreak. Ruth also shares her lockdown reading suggestions.

New for lockdown, the University of Birmingham is pleased to invite you to join our virtual Alumni Book Club. Alumni will engage with the book club through a private meeting, so registration is essential. Joining is completely free! All you need is a copy of the book to enjoy.  A confirmation email with a Zoom link will be sent on the morning of the event.
