Our community

At the University of Birmingham Dubai, we are proud to be part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country known for its diversity, ambition, and global community.

Over 90% of Dubai’s population are from overseas, with over 200 nationalities living, working, and studying in Dubai. Our campus reflects this vibrant mix of cultures and perspectives, creating a truly international learning environment where students gain not only a world-class education but also the intercultural awareness and global outlook needed to thrive in today’s interconnected world.

Our people

Our campus community brings together talented students, world-class academics, and dedicated Professional Services staff. Whether in the classroom, through research collaborations, or in our partnerships with industry and the wider community, the strength of our people is at the heart of what we do, equipping our graduates with the awareness, empathy, and skills to make a positive contribution to diverse communities worldwide.

Academics

We are reforming the career framework and support we offer to academics at all stages of their career through our Birmingham Academic programme, with the aim of supporting colleagues to develop and maintain an academic culture of intellectual stimulation and high achievement, whilst fostering a deep affinity with the institution. Our academic community is at the heart of the University’s success: it is through their teaching, research, and leadership that we inspire students, shape knowledge, and contribute to society.

In Dubai, this commitment is further reinforced by the introduction of the Dubai Academic Development Programme, designed to respond to the unique opportunities and challenges of our international context. The programme provides tailored support for colleagues to enhance their teaching practice, deepen their research impact, and engage meaningfully with the UAE’s diverse and dynamic environment. By investing in our academics in Dubai, we are not only strengthening individual career pathways but also building a vibrant scholarly community that reflects the University’s global outlook and underpins our reputation for excellence.

Professional Services

Our academic community in Dubai is strengthened by a team of highly capable Professional Services colleagues who work in close partnership with academics to advance the University’s mission. They provide essential technical, professional, administrative, and operational expertise that enables our students and staff to thrive. Within the UAE context, their work is especially valuable in helping us build strong connections with local communities, industry partners, and regulatory bodies, ensuring that the University of Birmingham Dubai continues to grow as a trusted and respected institution.

Through the Birmingham Professional programme, we affirm our commitment to investing in the development and wellbeing of our Professional Services staff. This initiative offers a wide range of training, mentoring, and career development opportunities, enabling colleagues in Dubai to enhance their skills, expand their networks, and contribute to the University’s global impact while also shaping higher education in the region.

Our interactions are guided by the University Values and enacted through an agreed Staff Charter.

An inclusive environment

We are committed to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and to creating a respectful environment for all. At the University of Birmingham, this means ensuring that every student and member of staff feels valued, supported, and able to succeed. We celebrate the richness of perspectives that come from different nationalities, faiths, and lived experiences, and we actively work to remove barriers that may prevent individuals from reaching their full potential.

In Dubai, we recognise the unique cultural and legal context of the UAE and act responsibly within it, fostering a community that is inclusive, globally minded, and respectful of local traditions and values. Our approach is guided by the University’s global Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion strategy, which promotes fairness, opportunity, and belonging across all our campuses. By embedding these principles into teaching, research, and campus life, we aim to equip our students with the awareness, empathy, and skills to make a positive contribution to diverse communities worldwide.

Guidelines and policies

The University is committed to ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience for students and staff across both our Birmingham and Dubai campuses. We are dedicated to maintaining a learning and working environment where equality is promoted, diversity is embraced, and discrimination is not tolerated. Wherever possible, guidelines and policies in place in Birmingham are applied equally in Dubai, supporting fairness and continuity in the student experience.
