Cancel your student visa
If you have completed your studies or no longer require your University-sponsored student visa, you must follow the official cancellation process. This ensures your immigration records are correctly updated with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s immigration authorities.
Why it's important
Your visa does not cancel automatically when it expires. If you do not cancel it, you may face immigration fines, which you will be responsible for paying.
Once your visa is cancelled, you must either:
- Leave the UAE
- Change your visa status
You will be given a grace period (stated on your cancellation document) to do this. If you stay in the UAE beyond this period without updating your visa status, you may face immigration fines or other penalties.
Do not book any travel (into or out of the UAE) until you have received your cancellation document from us.
How to cancel your visa
The cancellation process and timeline depend on whether you are inside or outside the UAE at the time of your request. Please follow the steps that apply to your situation.
Cancellation processing time
If you are inside the UAE
- Normal application: 10-14 working days
- Express application: 7-10 working days
If you’re outside the UAE
- Normal application: 3-4 weeks
- Express application: 2 weeks
Step-by-step guide
- Gather required documents: ensure you have all necessary documents, including a copy of your passport, and Emirates ID (colour copy of front and back)
- Pay the cancellation fee: make the payment to the University via card payment or bank transfer (alternatively, in the form you can request that we use your visa deposit to cover the costs)
- Complete the visa cancellation application: fill out the necessary fields with your personal details, and upload the required documents, including proof of payment (if required)
- Cancellation processing: Our team will apply to cancel your student visa
- Exit verification (for students who applied for inside cancellation): provide a copy of your new residence permit/visa if you are remaining in the UAE, or email us once you have left the UAE, at dubaistudentmobility@contacts.bham.ac.uk. Our team will submit your exit verification to close your file with AXS. We will email you once the cancellation is complete
- Apply for visa deposit refund: the University’s Finance team will process your refund request within 6 weeks

Fees
All visa fee charges listed are subject to change in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Government of the UAE.
Note: If you are leaving the UAE, as well as the visa cancellation fee, an additional fee of AED 317 is required for an immigration exit verification printout. This is part of the AXS exit procedure.
