This programme is designed for civil engineering graduates and graduates from related degrees and experience. The MSc/PGDip in Civil Engineering will equip you to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both industry and academia, and develop the technical, intellectual and transferable skills needed to underpin your education and development. You will gain a systematic knowledge and advance level understanding of Civil Engineering, including research and developments at the forefront of the discipline. You will be able to evaluate current research critically, and be original in the application of your knowledge, initiating new research across a number of potential fields related to the Civil Engineering profession. The taught element of your course (MSc and PGDip) takes place in the first year of the programme, and your individual research project (MSc only) will be undertaken in the second year. You can transfer from the PGDip to the MSc programme, upon completion of the PGDip, provided you satisfy the MSc requirements.

Teaching and MSc research project supervision will be contacted in partnership between academics on our Dubai campus, and our Edgbaston Campus. You will also have the opportunity to interact with our students in our Edgbaston campus in the UK whilst you study at our Dubai campus.  Importantly, throughout the programme there will be opportunity to learn from various industrialist who will add enrichment to the learning provided and support for research projects directly linked to current and future needs of the industry.

The MSc programme (2 years) is made up of a total of 240 credits, 120 of which are from taught modules delivered in the first year. The MSc research project is delivered in the second year and forms the basis of the remaining 120 credits.

The PGDip (1 year) is made up of a total of 120 credits, all of which are from taught modules.

Our Standard Requirements

Applicants for admission to the MSc/PGDip should normally hold, or be expecting to achieve, a 2:1 Honours degree in Civil Engineering or a relevant subject. Industrial experience and professional qualifications will also be taken into account.

International students

We accept a range of qualifications from different countries – learn more about international entry requirements. Standard English language requirements apply.

For students whose first language is not English, one of the following English language qualifications is required:

IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band is equivalent to:

  • TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 21 in Speaking and 19 in Writing
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
  • Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced – minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component

International Requirements

This programme provides a solid basis for a career in the implementation of construction and civil engineering projects. It includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and an individual project (MSc only).

The course is delivered in intense teaching blocks, so you can choose to study either full-time or part-time. Learning is delivered via lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars, as well as your individual project (MSc only).

The taught element takes place in the first year of the programme. In order to achieve the MSc degree, students will go on to undertake a major individual project in the second year. Diploma students do not take the individual project.

The taught part of the programme consists of nominally 1200 student effort hours including lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops (all delivered in a range of different ways) as well as self-study. The individual project involves approximate 1200 hours of student effort.

It is possible to study full-time or part-time, as modules are delivered in intensive 1-2 weeks long teaching blocks. This means that students can combine work and study, attending university for these weeks only. A student's performance is assessed by written examinations and/or individual coursework.

The MSc research project report is submitted typically after a satisfactory standard in the taught part of the programme has been reached.

Transfer between PGDip and MSc is possible upon successful completion of the PGDip for a Diploma student who satisfies the MSc requirements. The PGDip may be awarded to an MSc student who fails to complete the individual project.

Upon graduation, you can choose to begin or resume a career in civil engineering design consultancies, general management/engineering consultancies, civil engineering contractors, construction and structural engineering companies.

Graduating from this programme:

  • You will be able to deal with complex Civil Engineering issues, making sound judgements in the absence of complete information, and will be able to communicate your conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • You will be self-motivated and able to act autonomously and will have the qualities and transferable skills necessary to exercise initiative and personal responsibility, to make decisions in complex and unpredictable situations, and to have the independent learning ability required for the continuing professional development and the civil engineering practice.
  • You will display a high level of numeracy and display skills in problem solving, research, team working, and communication and information technology, which will equip you for a successful career outside as well as within the construction industry.
