What is Financial Mathematics?

If you have a strong undergraduate background in mathematics, economics, finance (or other programmes such as engineering, computer science and physics with a strong mathematical component) this programme will help you develop a specialisation in financial mathematics. You will learn technical skills that will help you pursue a future in quantitative financial analysis.

Financial mathematics is a highly specialised and rapidly growing area requiring a strong mathematical background alongside appropriate training in finance and computer programming. This MSc degree is both technical and practical. Students will acquire in-depth mathematical knowledge and skills applied to the area of finance, advanced skills and knowledge in computational and programming techniques as well as experience of extended project work.

Programme Learning Outcomes

By the end of their programme, you will have gained a knowledge and understanding of:

  2. The theory of Stochastic or random processes and their modern application within finance.
  3. Portfolio management and hedging.
  4. The theory of risk analysis and risk management and their applications within finance.
  5. Modern and emerging computational techniques as applied to the financial services sector.

By the end of their programme, you will have developed the following skills:

  1. The ability to use mathematical tools to explore and understand real-world applications in finance.
  2. The ability to model financial processes and to analyse and interpret associated data.
  3. Proficiency in utilising computational and programming techniques and tools employed in a variety of modern financial applications and scenarios.
  4. The ability to undertake a critical analysis of a problem based upon the fundamental principles of finance and determine appropriate solution pathways.

Course delivery

We offer a combination of mid-week and weekend classes which are designed to accommodate those who choose to study full-time.

Our draft timetable for full-time students is designed to deliver teaching on weekday evenings from 18:00-21:00 and on Saturday and Sunday between 09:00-15:00. This programme is taught full-time only.

We will consider applications from applicants who already have a first degree in computer science on a case-by-case basis.

Our Standard Requirements

2:1 Honours degree in Mathematics or a programme with advanced mathematical components.

Students from JBJI who obtain a minimum 2:1 and the IELTS English (mandatory to obtain the Degree) will have automatic acceptance onto this programme.

Course overview

You will take 60 taught credits of masters-level courses in each of Semester 1 and Semester 2. Core modules will develop your understanding of scientific and engineering programming, and advanced mathematical models in Mathematical Finance. You will take modules across economic, mathematical and financial topics to allow you to shape your degree to meet your career aims.

You will also undertake a 60-credit summer dissertation, working with research leaders in mathematics. This will provide directly relevant training for a career in academic, and quantitative analysis in the financial industry. You will train specifically in independent study and research, an essential skill for quantitative analysts.
