A day in my life
Most days start with lectures, anything from Calculus to Mechatronics. It’s a mix of deep theory and practical work, especially during labs where we test circuits, code embedded systems, or simulate control loops.
Between classes, I usually work on assignments, meet up with friends, or help plan events for the Women in STEM society. I’m always trying to stay involved around campus and keep up with what’s going on.
Evenings are quieter; sometimes I’m reviewing slides or working on a project (like a recent lunar communication system simulation), and other times I just need a break. It’s a full schedule, but I really enjoy the balance between technical challenges and creative problem-solving.
Why Birmingham Dubai?
I chose the University of Birmingham Dubai because it felt like the perfect balance, a well-established UK university with a campus right here in Dubai. I loved that I could get a globally recognised degree without having to leave a city I love.
Dubai is such a vibrant, fast-moving place with so many opportunities, and studying here means I get to stay connected to family, explore a growing tech scene, and still be part of an international academic environment.
What really stood out to me was how closely-knit the community is. You’re not just one student in a huge crowd; you actually get to know your professors, work closely with your peers, and feel supported throughout your journey. It felt like a place where I could really grow and belong.
On top of that, the range of student-led events and clubs makes campus life genuinely exciting. Whether it's academic workshops, social events, or creative initiatives, there’s always something happening, and it’s easy to get involved and feel like you are part of something bigger.
Choosing to study in Dubai
I moved to Dubai with my family when I was 12, so it’s pretty much home now. I chose to study here because Dubai is such a lively and diverse city with tons of opportunities, especially in the tech field.
What I love most about living here is the energy and mix of cultures. There’s always something going on, whether it’s events, tech expos, or just discovering new food spots. Having family close by makes the experience feel balanced and supportive for me.
Campus Open Days
I attended one of the Open Day events before starting my course. It really helped me get a feel for the campus, meet some of the staff, and understand what studying at Birmingham Dubai would be like.
The sessions were informative, but what stood out most was the atmosphere. It felt welcoming and supportive, and I could genuinely picture myself studying there. Talking to current students and staff made everything feel a lot more real and helped me feel confident in my decision.
Why I chose to study Computer Engineering
I chose Computer Engineering because I’m passionate about AI and robotics, and how intelligent systems and machines can change the world.
I was especially drawn to the practical projects and modules focused on robotics, automation, and AI applications, as they align perfectly with my career goals in these fields.
The hands-on teaching style and smaller class sizes make it easier to engage deeply and get support when needed.
My Birmingham Dubai experience
My student experience has been a solid mix of learning and getting involved. Lectures can be tough but also really interesting, and I’ve made some great friends who are just as into tech and innovation as I am.
Campus life is lively. I love events like Global Day, when everyone comes together to celebrate different cultures and just have a good time. Career fairs have been clutch too, helping me connect with companies and see what’s out there for after graduation.
I’m also part of the Student Association and Women in STEM, which gives me a chance to get involved and support stuff I care about.
Birmingham Dubai’s impact
The University has been super supportive throughout my studies. The close-knit environment means I get to know my professors, which makes asking for help or guidance way less stressful. They’re really approachable and invested in helping us succeed.
The careers team has also been a game-changer; they’re always there for advice, workshops, and opportunities that help me get ready for the job market. Whether it’s internships, networking events, or CV tips, they have got my back and make career planning way easier.
Advice for students
My biggest advice is to say yes to opportunities whenever they come your way. Getting involved in activities and helping out can open doors to new roles and experiences you didn’t expect.
At the same time, make sure you stay on top of your studies and don’t fall behind, because that’s the foundation everything else depends on. Balancing both is key.
If I could tell my past-self one thing, it would be to trust the process and keep pushing, even when it feels overwhelming. At the end of the day, it all adds up.
