Faith and community at the University of Birmingham Dubai

University life isn't just about lectures, deadlines, and exams. It's also about belonging, community, and personal growth. Joining the University, I felt a strong sense of belonging because of the different mix of cultures and religions across campus.

Celebrating diversity in a global city

Dubai is one of the most diverse cities in the world, home to over 200 nationalities. This diversity is reflected at the University of Birmingham Dubai, where students from many different backgrounds come together.

From my personal experience, Global Day was a mix of cultures, and I enjoyed experiencing different foods, traditions and sports. It showed me that we are all different but also have a lot in common.

The campus gives students opportunities to learn about different traditions, build friendships across backgrounds and gain new perspectives.

Recognising religious holidays

One thing I have noticed is how the University celebrates major religious holidays such as Ramadan and Eid, Diwali and Christmas.

Attending some of these events myself, I could feel the sense of belonging and community created by bringing together different cultures and religions. I particularly noticed this during Christmas, when the campus was decorated with Christmas trees and ornaments.

During Ramadan, the University adjusts class times to help students balance their studies with fasting. As a Muslim student, I found this helpful as it made it easier to manage my classes while fasting. They also screened off the cafeteria from view, which made fasting less stressful during the day.

The prayer room: a place for reflection and worship

Birmingham Dubai has dedicated prayer rooms. They're open to students of all faiths and backgrounds who would like a quiet place for prayer or reflection. As a Muslim student, I use it for my daily prayers throughout the day.

The room is equipped with Qurans, prayer mats and space for students to pray comfortably. Knowing there is a dedicated space on campus makes it easier to balance my religious practices with university life.

Support and community

What surprised me most was the support available from staff and student services when it comes to questions around faith, religious festivals and balancing studies with religious commitments.

Ultimately, one of the things I value most about studying at the University of Birmingham Dubai is being part of a community where people from different cultures and faiths can come together, learn from one another and feel respected.
