Brazil and Climate Change: Beyond the Amazon

We are honoured to host Professor Eduardo Viola from the University of Brasilia here at the University of Birmingham, for an intriguing discussion on climate change and the Amazon. 

Using the "Climate Commitment Approach" developed in his book "Brazil and Climate Change", Professor Viola will offer an updated assessment of Brazil’s role in the global political economy of climate change. He will explore the most common and widely cited questions on whether and in which way Brazil is aggravating or mitigating the climate crisis, including: Is it the benign, cooperative, environmental power that the Brazilian government claims it is? Why was it possible to dramatically reduce deforestation in the Amazon (2005-2010) and, more recently, was there a partial reversion? Why Brazil, contrary to many countries, didn't advance in de-carbonizing its energy matrix in the 21st century?  Why there is a big gap between the government rhetoric and the reality of climate policy? This engaging, and important guest lecture will appeal to colleagues and students from a broad range of academic disciplines including, Globalization and Governance, International Systems in the Anthropocene, International Political Economy of Energy/Climate Change and Brazilian Foreign Policy amongst others.
