Mozart’s brilliant motet, written for a famous castrato, is really a concerto for soprano voice. Brahms takes a theme from an earlier age and makes it very much his own, and Mahler draws on folk poetry as the inspiration for his delightful symphony, though there are darker moments on its journey to Heaven.
