The University is pleased to welcome Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director-General at CERN, to deliver his lecture as part of our Vice-Chancellor’s distinguished lecture series, our most prestigious lectures featuring leading public and academic figures.
CERN is the home of the Large Hadron Collider, a 27 kilometre long tunnel under the Swiss / French border, where physicists from all over the world are learning about the nature of matter and the beginning of the universe by colliding particles together at high energies under conditions that would have existed only a millionth of a second after the Big Bang.
Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer has been CERN Director General since January 2009, before which he was a staff member for 15 years. Most of his scientific work has focused on the study of electron-positron reactions, the development of experimental techniques, as well as the construction and operation of large detector systems.
