I am a NERC funded PhD student/PDRA/Fellow. How do I apply for a free course?

We have secured funding from research council NERC to provide training places to PhD students, PDRA's and Fellows who attend our courses. To apply for a bursary, simply choose this route when booking your place on our course. We'll be in touch shortly after to let you know if you've been accepted.

How to book a NERC funded bursary:

  1. Make a booking for the course of your choice through the online shop. Select 'NERC bursary' price.
  2. Provide as much detail as possible in your application. Information such as NERC funding grant number, PI and research are all extremely important for the bursary registration process.
  3. Submit your registration. You will receive a confirmation email from the automated online shop system.
  4. We will be in touch within a week to confirm whether you have been awarded a bursary to attend one of our courses. 

Bursaries will be awarded in line with the following funding priorities:

NERC bursary priorities

 NERC PhD students  Priority 1
 NERC PDRA's and Fellows  Priority 2
 Principle and Co-Investigators holding NERC funding  Priority 3

Please note that if you are not registering as a Priority 1 candidate, we may reserve confirmation until closer to the course, in order to allow other candidates to register. In most cases we will confirm your 


I am NOT funded by NERC. Where can I get funding?

Please note: we have now unfortunately run out of both the BBSRC and MRC bursaries for 2018/19.

We are attempting to source further funding to support these bursaries across 2019/20; if you would like to be notified should we manage to obtain further BBSRC/MRC bursaries, please email

I need some accomodation near you - what would you recommend?

Conferences & Events provide good standard accomodation at reasonable prices a mere 10 minute walk from the Birmingham Metabolomics Training Centre.

The BMTC uses Conferences & Events for our hotel bookings, and recommend their services to our trainees regularly.
