You might have some questions about the Birmingham International Summer School. Here are some of the most common questions and some helpful answers.

The Application Process

Who can apply for BISS?

To be accepted onto BISS, you must be over 18 and studying an undergraduate progtramme at a University outside the UK or be registered as and International student at a UK university. You must be of good academic standing and meet the BISS English Language requirements, as well as subject specific requirements if applicable. How do I apply?

Applications for BISS 2022 have closed. 

Can I apply for more than one BISS programme?

No, you can only apply for one programme option.

When will I hear from you about my application?

Students will receive an email confirming that their application has been received by the University. All applications are processed by the University Admissions Office, who will aim to inform you of the outcome within two weeks.

Please note that applications without an academic transcript will not be considered.

 

Fees

How much is the BISS fee?

The BISS fee is £2,750. Please see our Dates and Fees page to find out whether you are eligible for a discount.

What is included in the BISS fee?

The fee includes tuition and assessment, self-catering accommodation in University halls of residence and a programme of social events.

Can I get a discount?

Is there a deposit or application fee?

You will not be charged an application fee or asked to pay a deposit. The BISS fee must be submitted by the deadline Monday 2 May 2022, but you do not need to pay anything until then.

Credits

Are the Academic Programmes credit-bearing?

Yes, each programme is equivalent to an accredited undergraduate course: 20 UK credits, 5 US credits, or 10 ECTS.

When will I receive the credits?

Credits will be awarded on successful completion of the Academic Programme following assessment. An official transcript will be sent out to students between October and November following the Summer programme.

How can I transfer my credits?

Please check with your home institution regarding credit transfer.

Transcripts

Will I receive an official transcript for BISS?

Students who have successfully completed the BISS programme will receive an official academic transcript by the November following the Summer School period. The transcript will be posted to the correspondence address provided in the student's BISS application form. 

What if my transcript has not arrived?

Students who have not received their academic transcript by the end of the November following the Summer School period are advised to request a copy using Verify.

Visas

Which visa should I apply for?

You should apply for a Standard Visitor Visa.

How do I apply for my visa?

The University Admissions Office will provide you with a letter to use for your visa application once the conditions of your offer have been completed.

Preparing for BISS

Will accommodation and catering be provided?

Self-catered accommodation is provided as part of the BISS fee; students do not need to apply for this separately. All students will be provided with a single-occupancy room with ensuite facilities, with access to a shared living area and kitchen, fully equipped with equipment for cooking. 

When should I arrive in the UK?

The allocated arrival day for BISS students is Sunday 17 July 2022. Information will be sent out to all students with further instructions.

Will an airport pickup be provided?

An airport pickup may be available to students travelling to Birmingham International Airport during an allocated time on the arrival day, Sunday 17 July. An email will be sent out to students with further details prior to BISS 2022.

When can I register with the University of Birmingham?

An email will be sent to all students regarding the registration process.
