The University of Birmingham have a vibrant Collaboration Agreement with the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) that is managed by the EU & International team in Research Support Services.
The JRC is the European Commission’s science and knowledge service employing their own scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy through its five research centres across Europe (Petten, Geel, Seville, Ispra, Karlsruhe). Birmingham have held a formal Collaboration Agreement with the JRC since 2014 that, by the JRC’s own admission, is one of the most vibrant CA’s they have with a University. They cover a broad range of fields from engineering and physical sciences, medical, life and environmental sciences through to social sciences and our activities continue to grow.
Engaging with the JRC provides for us:
- A stronger impact for our research in relation to EU policy making.
- Access to JRC’s research facilities and researchers.
- Use of our collaboration in our EU and UK research bids.
and for the JRC:
- Reinforces their scientific excellence, competences and knowledge, through researcher to researcher interactions interactions.
- Enables stronger technical and scientific support to evidence gather for EU policies.
Our activities to date have been many from staff/ student placements, two-way visits and workshops, training programmes, seminars, summer schools and visits through to guest lectures to name a few both here and at the JRC.
