About our productions

The Department of Drama and Theatre Arts is a leader in the integrated academic and practical study of drama, performance and theatre arts. Students gain first-hand experience using and testing the language of performance in a variety of specialist study and practical modules.

Each year the Department stages a season of plays closely tied to its academic and practical work. Productions are performed by third year undergraduates and supported in lighting, sound, design/costume and stage management by second and first year students. Plays are directed either by members of the Department or guest directors from the professional theatre. Productions will be staged in the departments own performance venue George Cadbury Hall.

Furthermore, you might be interested to know that the University of Birmingham is engaged in an exciting five-year collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). This pioneering project has seen the reinstatement of the iconic RSC studio theatre, The Other Place, which opened in 2016 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. The Other Place is the RSC’s creative hub for rehearsal, training, learning and research.
