Tabitha Dunn

Tabitha graduated in 2014 with a degree in English Language. She is now working as a Marketing Executive at The History Press.

How did studying at the University of Birmingham help you find your career?

"After completing my BA in English Language with a 2:1 in July, I was determined to go into a job that was linguistically creative and made full use of my degree. Having learnt and discussed such a wide range of issues about the English Language and what it could achieve, I was looking for a way that I could apply this knowledge practically.

“I know that I would not have been considered for my current position without a relevant, strong degree from a good university to make my CV stand out from the rest”

How did you get to where you are today?

“I considered a few options after attending a number of talks hosted by the careers network but I shortly became focussed on jobs within the marketing or publishing sector. I was incredibly lucky that a publishing company near to me was looking for a graduate to work in the marketing department. I was chosen, out of 45 applicants, to fill the role.

What does your role entail?

“My day-to-day role includes talking to authors to get the best understanding of their texts and talking to journalists to promote the books and help them put together features on local authors. I write press releases, help give advice to commissioning editors about books that are most marketable and I am solely responsible for the marketing of all local books and historical crime fiction. I love every second of my job and find the faith put that is put in me even after such a short time in the role, incredibly rewarding.”
