A lecture recital by Dr Andrew Ashbee and Passamezzo

With a varied repertory of vocal and instrumental music, including tavern drinking catches, pastoral songs and dialogues, & music from the masques, "Shadows, not substantial things" showcases the glorious music performed in indoor Jacobean and Caroline theatres in the era following Shakespeare.

James Shirley (1596-1666) wrote for a variety of theatres, from the Blackfriars & the Phoenix in London to the first public playhouse in Dublin. His elegant & witty fast-paced prose is still appreciated by critics as is his sophisticated portrayal of contemporary social mores. His strong characterisation of women paved the way for the first women on the Restoration stage. Shirley wrote over 30 plays between 1625 and 1642 when the theatres closed.
