Introduction to the Oak National Academy (ELA Seminar)

Matt Hood, Principal and a Founder of Oak National Academy, the national online classroom will talk about Oak, its origins, how it has developed and how online learning has influenced pedagogy.

The seminar will be chaired by Ava Sturridge-Packer CBE, former primary head in Birmingham and currently DfE and Birmingham Education Partnership adviser.

The audience will be able to ask questions of the speaker and chair.

About the speaker

Matt trained to be an economics teacher with Teach First then went on to become a DfE policy adviser before returning to teaching, becoming assistant head at Morecambe's Heysham High School (now Bay Leadership Academy).

In 2015 he founded the Institute for Teaching, a charity focused on developing and improving teachers' expertise. It merged with Ambition School Leadership in 2018 to become the Ambition Institute, an education charity tackling educational disadvantage through evidence-based professional development for teachers and school leaders.

Hood is also Chair at Bay Leadership Academy in Morecambe, Governor at Lancaster and Morecambe College and an independent adviser to the Department for Education on teacher development.

He was awarded an MBE for service to education in 2020.
