Chris Millington

BSc Environmental Science, 2021

Senior Infrastructure and environmental planner consultant

I started a working in environmental monitoring, specifically for historic landfill sites to get the environmental on-site experience that I wanted. I realised that this wasn’t quite what I wanted to do, so I joined SYSTRA to work on the HS2 project, the experience of which was invaluable. As I worked on the HS2 project, I realised that I wanted more experience across a variety of different planning applications, so I went to work for Stantec, contributing to and coordinating Environmental Statements for large scale residential and commercial developments. I have since decided to move to Pegasus, to be part of a physically established team operating in Birmingham, contributing to their growth and building an EIA Team. I love having a part in creating tomorrows sustainable and resilient communities.

Why did you choose to study Geography at Birmingham?

The University of Birmingham is reknowned for its Environmental Sciences programme. There is a diverse cohort of students, with a lot of world knowledge, and I thought that this would be the best place for my learning and ambition. It was also the closest University to my home address at the time.

What skills/knowledge did you develop at Birmingham the helped you to follow your career path?

The Environmental Sciences course at UoB allowed me to holistically understand the environment, and more importantly, how we are a part of it and the influence that we have. My scientific understanding and technical analysis would not be where they are today, if it wasn’t for UoB.

What advice would you give to current students studying on your degree programme?

Always seek feedback on everything that you do – and be your own worst critic. Look for opportunities to put yourself outside of your ‘comfort zone’ – as this will enable you to face challenges and grow. More importantly, don’t forget what convinced you to undertake your studies in the first place!
