BSc Geography, 2023

MSc Air Pollution Management and Control

I have continued my studies at UoB to further my knowledge in a specific field of geography that I am most interested in.

Why did you choose to study Geography at Birmingham?

I was attracted to the BSc Geography course at Birmimgham due to the flexibility it offered around optional modules. When I was a prospective student, I was keen to study both human and physical geography modules and Birmimgham was one of the few courses offering this.

Another stand out feature was the exciting fieldtrips. In my second year I had the unique opportunity to visit the Swiss Alps to study glaciers, snow profiles and avalanche risk.

On the open day, I felt so welcomed by the current students and loved hearing about their experiences within the course and societies! I would say this is what ultimately lead me to Birmingham!

What skills/knowledge did you develop at Birmingham the helped you to follow your career path?

One of the key transferable skills that I gained is data analysis. Within many of my modules and dissertation project, I undertook in depth analysis of large datasets and developed knowledge in statistical anslysis.

Additionally, I experienced using many different softwares inlcuding GIS, R studio and SPSS which has already been useful in my masters studies as well as being valued by many employers.

What advice would you give to current students studying on your degree programme?

I would encourage everyone to consider the placement module offered in third year. It was such a valuable experience to work with an organisation in the region and apply my skills in a proffesional environment.

Make the most of the academics around you and don’t be afraid to ask questions and visit lecturer’s drop in hours.

My final piece of advice is to always get involved in the amazing opportunities throughout the course!
