Rhoswen’s research is focused on peatland hydroecology. Peatlands provide important ecosystem services such as carbon and water storage (Peatlands hold ~10% of the world’s freshwater and contain twice as much carbon as the world’s forests, yet they only cover 3% of the world's land area). Rhoswen's interdisciplinary research investigates ecosystem feedback mechanisms, where both ecological and hydrological processes play key roles in peatland functioning.
Her current research focuses on the control of vegetation on peatland evapotranspiration in the sub-humid Boreal of western Canada. Evapotranspiration is the dominant form of water loss from the peatlands in this region. She will look in detail at ecosystem evapotranspiration and how this changes with shifts in species compositions as a result of disturbance. Understanding how evapotranspiration rates change in response to disturbance is important in order to understand the resilience of sensitive, carbon rich ecosystems.
Mae Rhoswen yn ymchwilio i hydroecoleg mawndiroedd. Mae mawndiroedd yn gronga bwysig o Garbon ac o ddŵr (mae nhw’n dal ~10% o ddŵr-croyw’r byd ac er bod mawndiroedd dim ond yn cyfri 3% o dir y byd, mae nhw’n cynnwys dwy waith gymaint o Garbon ag sydd yng nghoedwigoedd y byd).Wrth ymchwilio i brosesau ecologol yn ogystal ag hydrolegol, gall Rhoswen wella dealltwriaeth prosesau sy’n allweddol ar gyfer gweithrediadau sy’n allweddol i mawndiroedd.
Ym Mhrifysgol Birmingham, mae ei hymchwil doethuriaeth yn canolbwyntio ar sut mae llystyfiant yn rheoli anwedd-trydarthiad yng Ngorllewin Canada. Trwy anwedd trydarthiad mae’r mawndiroedd (yn yr ardal yma o Ganada) yn colli dŵr yn bennaf. Mi fydd Rhoswen yn edrych yn fanwl ar anwedd-trydarthiad yr ecosystem a sut newidia'r anwedd-trydarthiad wrth i gyfansoddiad rhywogaethau newid wrth ymateb i aflonyddiadau o fewn yr ecosystem. Mae deall yr ymateb yma yn bwysig ar gyfer deall gwydnwch y mawndiroedd sensitif yma sy’n gyfoethog yn nhermau Carbon.
