After completing a degree in Geology with Palaeontology (Imperial College, UK) David Ray undertook a PhD on the stratigraphy of the Wenlock limestones (Silurian) of the English Midlands and Welsh Borders (University of Cincinnati, USA). David has taught geology at both degree level and A-level and for the last decade has worked in the hydrocarbon exploration industry. David is a member of the Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy and the Stratigraphy Commission of the Geological Society of London. He is currently involved in several research projects aimed at improving the stratigraphic understanding of the Silurian of the UK and beyond.


David’s research interests focus upon Silurian stratigraphy and the use of sequence stratigraphy, carbon isotopic excursions and volcanic ash horizons as a means of high-resolution correlation. These high-resolution correlations have then been used to investigate Silurian environmental events that impacted upon the atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere.
