Research Fellowship Scheme

The School welcomes applications under a number of Research Fellowship schemes, further details of which can be found below. Prospective applicants for any of the Fellowships should consult Dr Kirsty Edgar, the School's Head of Research or Chris Bradley (Research Strategy and Services Central) in the first instance.

  • British Academy
The schemes allows established scholars to undertake or complete an approved programme of research, while relieved of their normal teaching and administrative commitments, and are intended for researchers who have already published works of intellectual distinction.
  • ESRC Research Fellowship Scheme
ESRC Research Fellowships provide a salaried period of two to three years, to enable researchers at any levels to undertake a variety of academic activities, such as further training or the consolidation of previous research, in all areas of social and economic science.  In addition, there is also a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme available.
  • Leverhulme Trust
The Leverhulme Trust offers a number of Fellowships each year, including Early Career Fellowships to support postdoctoral research and a range of Fellowships for experienced researchers.  Details of the individual schemes can be found on the Trust’s web site.
  • Marie Curie Fellowships
Marie Curie fellowships aim to encourage international mobility of researchers.  Full details of the opportunities available can be found on the web site.
  • NERC Fellowship Scheme
The scheme aims to support a small number of outstanding environmental scientists to establish and develop a research career.  Fellowships are available at two levels: postdoctoral and advanced.  The closing date for applications is 15 November each year.
  • Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851
The Royal Commission provides a small number of Fellowships for young scientists to conduct research for a period of two years.
  • Royal Society
The Royal Society offers a range of Fellowships for scientists from junior postdoctoral level to senior professorship level.  Closing dates for each award vary, but can be found on the web site.
