It is with great sadness that the University of Birmingham sadly notes the passing away of Professor Philip Hanson OBE, a long serving colleague in the Centre for Russian and East European Studies. Phil was an outstanding authority and one of the foremost Western scholars on the Soviet, Russian and East European economies.

Visiting Professor, University of Michigan, 1977; Senior Mellon Fellow, Harvard University, 1986/87; Senior Economic Affairs Officer, UN ECE, 1991-92; Distinguished Fellow, RFE/RL Research Institute, Munich, 1992; Visiting Professor, Institute of Economic Research, Kyoto, 2000 and (from 2003) Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of International Affairs Russia and Eurasia Programme. Awarded an OBE for services to Soviet and Russian Studies 2011.
