Author of a number of publications on Russian history from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, her books include: The Agrarian Policy of the Russian Socialist-Revolutionary Party (1976), The Image of Ivan the Terrible in Russian Folklore (1987), Pretenders and Popular Monarchism in Early Modern Russia (1995), The Cult of Ivan the Terrible in Stalin's Russia (2001) and (with Andrei Pavlov) Ivan the Terrible (Longman ‘Profiles in Power’, 2003).  She has also edited the first (pre-Petrine) volume of the three-volume Cambridge History of Russia (2006). In 2001-4 she served as President of BASEES (the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies). Her current research is on seventeenth-century Russia, especially popular movements, popular attitudes and issues relating to political legitimacy.
