‘Where There Was No Aid: War and Peace in Somaliland’ with Dr Sarah Philips (University of Sydney)

The IDD Guest Seminar Series is delighted to welcome Dr Sarah Philips (Associate Professor, Department of Government and International Relations, University of Sydney) to discuss her latest book.

Abstract

When There Was No Aid: War and Peace in Somaliland

For all of the doubts raised about the effectiveness of international aid in advancing peace and development around the world, there are few examples of places in the global South that are even relatively untouched by it. Somaliland’s early years (roughly 1991-2001) offer one such example. This seminar will examine whether global development aid matters less than we think it does to the prospects for peace and development.

Speaker:

Sarah Phillips teaches and researches in International Relations, particularly in global conflict and development. Her research draws from years of in-depth fieldwork, and focuses on international intervention in the global south, knowledge production about conflict-affected states, and non-state governance, with a geographic focus on the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sarah is the author of three books, the latest of which, When There Was No Aid: War and Peace in Somaliland (Cornell University Press, 2020) was awarded the Australian Political Science Association’s biennial Crisp Prize for the best political science monograph (2018-2020). It was also a ‘Best Book of 2020’ at Foreign Affairs, a ‘Book of the Year (2020)’ at Australian Book Review, and was shortlisted for the Conflict Research Society 'Book of the Year' Prize (2021).
