‘Am I not a Woman and a Sister’ was a motto of the anti-slavery campaign.  It reflects the experiences of black women and the role of women in the international crusade to eliminate slavery. Jasmine Williams discusses how the campaign illustrated the fundamental role of words, and, whilst advocating the emancipation of black women, elevated the status of all females.
