PhD title: For all our people” – the origin and early development of the public library movement in Birmingham and its impact on the educational and cultural life of the city – 1861-1914

Supervisors: Dr Malcolm Dick

Retired librarian. Former member of staff in the University Library, University of Birmingham.

My PhD research will be exploring the history of Birmingham's 'Free' libraries, championed by Civic Gospeller, George Dawson. Initially, I am examining the library built-form, considering how the architectural styles and their interior designs reflect both the social and cultural conventions of the time and the aspirations and motivations of the city's civic and cultural leaders.
