Tea with the Sphinx

Tea with the Sphinx was a two-day international conference around the theme of modern (from the early nineteenth century onwards) cultural representations of ancient Egypt.

Tea with the SphinxThis event, held at the University of Birmingham in September 2016, brought together historians, archaeologists, Egyptologists, scholars of literature and the media, art historians  and heritage experts from four continents to forge new perspectives on this emerging area of scholarship.

A programme of 22 papers by presenters ranging from internationally established scholars to current postgraduates (see conference report) was complemented by a magic lantern show of slides of nineteenth century Egypt, an exhibition of early twentieth century Egyptian photography, and visits to the collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts held by the Barber Institute.

Engagement with the wider community was achieved by a free public screening of the film The Mummy and via Twitter feeds (captured on Storify), blogposts and a Facebook event.  The creation of podcasts and an expected publication of an edited collection of conference outputs deliver a permanent resource for this burgeoning area of research.
