Emma Ahmed-Rengers is interested in the intersection of law and computer science, specifically data science. Her latest research project investigates the use of computer vision technologies in war, with a focus on the interaction between image recognition technology and the law of armed conflict. Her broader research interests include the legal and moral implications of data science, the responsible governance of technology, philosophy of technology, and the relationships between emerging technologies and power.

Emma is the programme coordinator of the MSc in Responsible Data Science, a unique conversion programme which equips lawyers with both specialised technical skills and cutting-edge knowledge on governance and regulation.

Emma’s appointment as Lecturer is shared between the School of Law and the School of Computer Science.

Biography

Before joining as a Lecturer, Emma was a PhD candidate at the School of Law and the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. She had previously worked as a junior researcher and academic tutor at the University of Amsterdam. She conducted research on international law and social justice under supervision of Professor Ingo Venzke, and taught modules on public international law, legal theory, political theory, philosophy of the social sciences, and human rights.

Emma holds an LLM from Queens’ College, University of Cambridge and a BSc in Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics (PPLE) from the University of Amsterdam. To complement her legal training, she spent the first year of her doctoral research following modules in Computer Science, specifically focused on machine learning and computer vision technologies.

Research

Emma’s research is characterised by a commitment to interdisciplinarity. Although primarily focussed on law, Emma is interested in a myriad of approaches to the relationship between law and technology, including science and technology studies (STS) and critical legal theory.

Her current project considers the use of computer vision technologies, particularly image recognition, in armed conflict.

Emma also contributes to policy discussions on the regulation of data science and artificial intelligence, such as through the recent Consultation on the European Commission’s proposed AI Act.
