The Department of Modern Languages boasts a particularly vibrant postgraduate (PG) community that allows students to flourish both intellectually and socially, while also providing support.
We offer our postgraduate research (PGR) students:
- Bespoke research training
- Expert supervision (each student is allocated two supervisors)
- Monthly feedback on progress and annual reviews, which enable you to develop your research capacity
- Departmental research seminars/work in progress sessions
- Well-equipped work spaces, excellent library and IT facilities, and Westmere, the PGR hub at the University, which is the centre for workshops, conferences, training, social events and networking
- Support for research trips and conference attendance, inter-library loans, organisation of student conferences
We also host a range of events, including the following:
- Regular PG Seminars: these seminars enable you to develop your work in a supportive environment composed of academic faculty and fellow PG students. They take place within the auspices of the principal Modern Languages research groups, which are listed below
- Annual PG Conference: this event, which usually takes place in May, gives PGs in the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music the opportunity to present their research findings to both staff and PG students
- Research Poster Conference: this one-day interdisciplinary conference is a good opportunity for PGRs to showcase their research, network with other researchers, enhance their skills and gain experience in presenting their research to non-specialists
