Description
This module will provide a supportive and structured learning environment for MSci Applied Psychology students during your time on external practical placements, where you will be working under the supervision of applied psychologists in the NHS, schools, forensic settings and other services. The module also provides a breadth of knowledge by exposing you to issues in dfferent subareas of applied psychology.
A series of five two-hour seminar sessions will provide you with an introduction to some common topics in Applied Psychology, and a forum for discussing your learning on placement, and connecting these experiences to an academic evidence. The sessions will be facilitated by a rotating group of staff and doctoral trainees from the educational, clinical and forensic psychology course-teams. You will also have the opportunity to showcase a placement related task/activity that you have been involved in.
Sample topics might include:
- Psychosis
- Autism
- Challenging behaviour
- Offender treatment programs
- Restorative justice
- Physical health
- Resilience and trauma
- Attachment and loss
- Carers and families
The facilitator will provide you with three to five key papers for their seminar topic, two weeks in advance of the seminar. For each seminar, one pair of students will work together to prepare a short presentation to start the seminar off, and a series of questions / discussion points to be covered in the seminar.
The sessions will run once per fortnight through the Spring term, in order to keep you in consistent contact with the University.
