The paper will reflect on the state of the debates in the U.K. and U.S. with regard health care reform. 

Speaker: Alex Waddan, University of Leicester

Beyond the sloganizing, how should we assess whether health care reforms over the last 10 years have shifted the UK, or more specifically England, from an archetypal government run health care system towards a privatised model, and how can we answer the question of whether the U.S. moved in the opposite direction and towards greater government involvement in the organization and provision of care.

Biography

Alex Waddan is an Associate Professor in Politics at the University of Leicester. He has published numerous articles on U.S. politics and social policy and is author, with Daniel Beland and Phil Rocco, of Obamacare Wars (University of Kansas Press, 2016). He has also published on U.K. health policy, including ‘The Americanization of the British National Health Service: A typological approach’ in Health Policy co-authored with Daniel Beland and Martin Powell. His most recent publication, written with Edward Ashbee and John Dumbrell, is The American Right After Reagan (Edward Elgar, 2019).
