Why Are We Waiting? Practical strategies to tackle NHS waiting times
- Thursday 3 November 2022 (14:30-15:30)
In the latest of the HSMC at 50 Seminars, Former Analysis Director for the NHS Modernisation Agency Mike Davidge takes a look at the causes of waiting lists and explores solutions available to practitioners.
NHS waiting lists are back in the frame post-Covid, although they have never really gone away. Despite real success in reducing waiting times in the early 2000's, the science behind why queues form is poorly understood in the NHS. This webinar will show you how to diagnose the causes of waits and enable you to make better decisions about tackling them. And it is not always about more money or staff!
Mike Davidge retired from the UK National Health Service in August 2017. He originally joined in 1979 from the manufacturing industry. Based at HSMC in the early 1980s, he was jointly responsible for creating the first national performance indicators in England and between 1986 and 1992 was part of a team that pioneered reduced waiting times in England and Wales. He left HSMC in 1998 and spent the next 20 years in the world of quality improvement.
He became the Analysis Director for the NHS Modernisation Agency in 2001 and later Head of Measurement at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement in 2009. His current role is as a Director with NHS Elect. He was also a Senior Improvement Advisor for NHS Wales from 2008-2015.
Throughout 2022, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham. This is 50 years of being one of the UK’s foremost centres for research and evaluation, teaching and professional development for health and social care organisations. 50 years of being a “critical friend” of the healthcare community and striving to bridge the gap between research and practice.
If you have any memories from the past 50 years you can share them in the HSMC at 50 memory book.
