Developing a Recovery Focus in Mental Health Services in England (2009 - 2014)

Funded by Department of Health / Kings College, London

Emerging from the mental health service user/survivor movement, a new approach to recovery is being proposed which foregrounds issues of empowerment, social inclusion and moving on from an 'illness' identity.

The implementation of this approach within mainstream services is the subject of a major National Institute for Health Research study in which Jerry Tew (the researcher) is a collaborator with the Institute of Psychiatry. The initial stages of this study have involved a comprehensive conceptual review and a national evaluation of current practice.

This provides the groundwork for a clinical trial of the implementation of recovery approaches within multi-dicsiplinary teams, including particular research questions around how well this may be working for people from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
