Career experiences

Since graduating from Birmingham I have been heavily involved in setting up, developing and managing golf courses owned by the Bridgedown group. This group builds and operates golf courses for celebrity designers such as Seve Ballesteros. This has led me to gain experience off the best in the industry in regards to the whole of the golf business from teaching to designing and building championship golf courses. Using my knowledge gained through the applied golf management degree, I have been able to apply my theoretical knowledge to all aspects of my career.

What is the best thing about what you are doing now?

At the moment I am enjoying running the day to day operations of The Shire London, Seve Ballesteros first designed course in the UK.

What is the best thing about your time as an AGMS student?

Firstly aside from the educational aspect, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I would say the friends that I made were one of the greatest things to happen whilst at Uni. This has now developed into business contacts as my friends have now entered into high profile jobs where everyone can help each other.

How did you grow as a person by coming to University? Did it change your life in any way?

The biggest thing that you learn to do at university is to live on your own and look after yourself. This extends not only to feeding yourself etc but to managing your finances and meeting deadlines which are vital to developing your professional career. University is not just a change of life but it is a way of life, it is an amazing experience which everyone should try!

What were your expectations and experiences of Birmingham?

The experience of moving away from home and developing as a person exceeded my expectations. I would love to go back now!!

Advice for current students

Enjoy your time at university to the maximum and remember that every contact you make can become a contact that will help your career to develop once you graduate.
