Nicola Anderson, PhD, is a Research Fellow within the Centre for Patient Reported Outcomes Research (CPROR) at the University of Birmingham and Lead Nurse for RD & I Research Education at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.  Nicola's primary research interests are mixed methods outcomes research, with a focus on the use and implementation of electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) in routine health and social care settings.

Biography

Having initially pursued a career in Law, Nicola retrained in 1999 as a Registered Nurse, working as a Clinical Research Nurse within the NHS since 2003. Nicola has worked across a range of specialities including oncology, palliative care and nephrology delivering and co-ordinating clinical drug and device trials.  

Nicola completed an MSc in Healthcare Law and Ethics in 2008 and began an HEE NIHR ICA Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship in 2019 exploring the use and implementation of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in the management of patients with end stage kidney disease requiring treatment with haemodialysis.

Following completion of her PhD in 2023, Nicola has taken up a Research Fellow post funded by the Applied Research Collaborative West Midlands exploring the use and implementation of ePROs at the interface between health and social care.

The Easier Study - ARC WM funded project exploring the potential of ePROs at the interface between health and social care.

Nicola is also involved in CPROR research on equitable PRO data collection and the involvement of under-served groups in research, taking place across NIHR infrastructures to explore EDI aspects of PROs planning, development and implementation.

  • Nicola sits on the Executive Committee of the Association of Nephrology Nurses UK (ANNUK) and is a nurse representative for the UK Renal Trials Network (UKRTN) and UK Dialysis Research & Innovation Network.  As Lead for the ANNUK Nursing Research in Kidney Care Community of Practice, she is passionate about nurse-led research and increasing the voice of nurses within the research multidisciplinary team.
