Jon Bishop is a senior medical statistician at the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) and the NIHR Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC).

Jon is interested in the design, conduct and analysis of large scale late phase randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs). In his BCTU work he assesses medical, surgical, and complex interventions in a diverse portfolio of clinical trials including the areas of Trauma, Maternal Health, Orthopaedics, and Renal Disease. In his SRMRC work, Jon supports various studies of clinical data, both trial and non-trial related, including work covering burns, surgery, ophthalmology and military trauma.

His research has been published in various high impact scientific journals (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, BMJ) and he is a co-applicant on numerous grants funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funding streams.

Biography

After graduating from the University of St Andrews in 2003 with a first class MSci degree (hons) in Mathematics and Statistics, Jon stayed on to complete a PhD in Statistical Ecology in 2009.

Following his PhD, Jon worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of St Andrews, before joining the Primary Care team at the University of Birmingham in 2010. Then, in 2012, he joined Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) as a medical statistician for the Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC) in 2012. Jon progressed to the role of senior statistician in 2018.

Research

Through his work in BCTU and the SRMRC,  Jon has developed a wide range of practical experience in various clinical trial designs including: pilot and feasibility studies, cluster-randomised trials, and observational studies. He is also interested in developing trial methodology and exploring the properties of various analysis methods.

Jon is the senior statistician on a wide variety of clinical trials in the areas of Trauma, Maternal Health, Orthopaedics and Renal Disease, assessing medical, surgical and complex interventions.
