Punith's research interests include impact of steroids on reproduction and metabolism, cancer therapy related endocrinopathies and improving the quality of care in diabetes and endocrinology. His current work focuses on how androgen activation in adipose tissue impacts on metabolic phenotype in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and how modulation of these pathways might inform on new treatments for this disorder.

Punith Kempegowda from the Institute of Metabolism & System Research at the University of Birmingham shares his #WeAreIMSR story about his work on the DAISY-PCOS @daisypcos research project which focuses on polycystic ovary syndrome #PCOS. He also discusses his clinical work at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham @qehbham, including now caring for #covid19 patients during the first 24 hours of them being admitted into the hospital. He also talks about carrying on his teaching duties using innovative methods. Show you support research by helping us share these #WeAreIMSR stories far and wide.

Biography

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common amongst women of reproductive age affecting their metabolism and ability to conceive. Whilst insulin resistance and androgen excess form a cardinal part of the disease, the exact pathophysiology remains unclear. Recently, the discovery of ketosteroids and an enzyme that activates steroids has rejuvenated the hopes of discovering newer treatment modalities. He is currently dissecting the impact of these ketosteroids to better understand the pathophysiology.

Punith has been awarded a public engagement grant from the Society for Endocrinology, for the second year. The award will enable him to work closely with the IMSR’s public engagement lead, Dr Caroline Gillett, to build on lessons learned from last year’s experience conducting endocrinology masterclasses for school students, whilst adding in new goals to create educational materials on endocrine themes created by and for young people. This will be done by co-creation workshops with medical students and young people who then present their work to the scientific community.
