Dr Andreas Karwath studied applied Mathematics and Computer Science in Stuttgart, Germany and Pontypridd, Wales. He received his PhD from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (now Aberystwyth University) in the field of Computational Biology / Machine Learning from the Computer Science Department. After a short excursion to industry he joined the Machine Learning and Data Mining lab of the University of Freiburg. Dr Karwath joined the Centre for Computational Biology in 2017 after holding positions in Mainz, Germany (as research fellow) and Rome, Italy (as visiting researcher).


The main research areas of Dr Karwath are concerned with the application of Machine Learning and Data Mining to a variety of fields within the life sciences. This includes Bioinformatics, Cheminformatics and Medical Informatics. From a computer science perspective, he is interested in structured as well as unstructured data and the fusion of different data types.
