Dr Ogunlade is an Associate Professor working in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences with a joint appointment in the School of Engineering. Ollie’s research interests are the development of instrumentation and novel methods in biomedical photoacoustic and thermoacoustic imaging and their preclinical and clinical applications to the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of a wide range of diseases, such as atherosclerosis and cancer.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Microwave Measurements and Engineering, University of Leeds, 2009
  • BEng in Electronics and Communications Engineering, University of Leeds, 2004

Biography

Dr Ollie Ogunlade obtained a first class honours degree in Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Microwave Engineering, from the University of Leeds. His industry sponsored PhD, under the supervision of Professor Roger Pollard and Professor Ian Hunter, was on the measurement of microwave dielectric properties of tissue-mimicking liquids.

After his PhD in 2009, Ollie worked as a post-doctoral research fellow on contrast enhanced microwave breast cancer imaging, under the supervision of Professor Yifan Chen at the University of Greenwich. He subsequently joined the UCL Photoacoustic imaging group of Professor Paul Beard in 2010. His research focused on instrumentation, methods development and applications of photoacoustic (PA) imaging and related technologies. He was the lead physicist in preclinical PA imaging at the UCL Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging, using PA imaging as a tool to study chronic kidney disease, angiogenesis in tissue-engineered scaffolds and wound healing, tumour response to vascular targeted therapy. The latter study was published in Clinical Cancer Research in 2019, and was selected as a research highlight in Radiology. His research has been published in prestigious journals including Nature Photonics.

In 2020, Dr Ogunlade was awarded an independent research fellowship at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional Sciences (WEISS) at UCL. During this fellowship, he began developing the next generation of whole-body preclinical photoacoustic scanners for achieving unprecedented imaging quality and depths.

In 2023, Ollie was appointed as an Associate Professor in Biomedical thermoacoustic imaging at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, with a joint appointment at the School of Engineering. He will continue to develop new imaging tools to increase our understanding of cardiovascular and other major diseases as well as assessing the efficacy of therapeutic interventions.
