Andy joined the School of Chemistry in 2020 as a Birmingham Fellow and started a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in January 2021. He leads the Jupp Research Group, a growing group of talented researchers whose research interests lie at the interface of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and sustainability.

Biography

Andrew Jupp obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford (2012-2016) under the supervision of Professor Jose Goicoechea. He worked on phosphorus-containing analogues of the cyanate anion and urea, for which he was awarded the 2015 Reaxys Ph.D. Prize in Hong Kong.

He subsequently won a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship to work with Professor Doug Stephan at the University of Toronto (2016-2018), exploring the synthesis and reactivity of main-group Lewis acids and bases, and the conversion of greenhouse gases such as CO2.

Andy then secured an NWO-VENI grant to pursue independent research at the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam (2018-2020), working under the mentorship of Associate Professor Chris Slootweg on the formation and characterisation of main-group radicals.

Dr Jupp was appointed as a University of Birmingham Fellow in July 2020, and commenced a Royal Society university Research Fellowship in January 2021, working on a range of topics around main-group chemistry and sustainability.

Postgraduate supervision

Andy is interested in supervising MSci and postgraduate students in the following areas:

  • Small-molecule activation and conversion of gases, such as N2 and CO
  • Photochemistry and photocatalysis involving main-group molecules
  • Molecular photoswitches
