Biography

Ross studied for his undergraduate dental degree in Malta, graduating first in his class in 2003 with distinctions in oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology and child dental health and orthodontics. He worked for the state health system in Malta between 2003 and 2005 before relocating to the United Kingdom. He then worked in the West of Scotland (2005-2007) as a senior house officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and came to Birmingham to complete an accelerated medical degree, graduating in 2010 first in his class. He was awarded the Sir Arthur Thompson Gold Medal and the Chancellor’s Prize, given annually to one graduate entry student deemed to have an outstanding academic record and have contribute the life of the university.

Following graduation, Ross worked as junior doctor in the West Midlands including completing core training in plastic surgery. He then gained a place on the higher training programme in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the West Midlands, where he acted as trainee representative on the trainer’s committee in the region. He completed his exit Fellowship examinations in 2017 and specialty training in 2018 with two nationally awarded sub-specialty training fellowships in cosmetic surgery (Nottingham) and skin cancer (Leeds).

In 2018 Ross was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust with subspecialty interests in TMJ surgery and skin cancer. Research

Ross has been actively involved in pedagogical research during his time as a higher trainee. Following on from this he has published research into “flipped classrooms” for postgraduate training of dental core trainees in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Other areas of interest include designing a novel classification system for extended temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacements, outcomes reporting in prosthetic joint replacements and examining disparities in training opportunities and experience in TMJ surgery nationally.
