Ross is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust with subspecialty interests in skin cancer, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery and medical/dental education.

Following completion of higher surgical training in the West Midlands, he undertook national Training Interface Group (TIG) Fellowships in Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgery and the Management of Skin Cancer in Nottingham and Leeds respectively.

Ross has a strong interest in medical/dental education and graduated with distinction from the acclaimed Masters in Medical Education (MMEd) distance-learning programme with the University of Dundee. Since 2016 he has held the position of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer with the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. His current role with the School of Dentistry is Module Lead for the Human Diseases programme that runs in the third year of the BDS degree, as well as being Co-Lead for the Intermediate Clinical Practice module in the fourth year.

He has published pedagogical research concentrating on technology-enhanced learning (TEL), particularly the design of bespoke virtual learning environments (VLEs) and flipped classrooms.

Biography

Ross studied for his undergraduate dental degree in Malta, graduating first in his class in 2003 with distinctions in oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology and child dental health and orthodontics. He worked for the state health system in Malta between 2003 and 2005 before relocating to the United Kingdom. He then worked in the West of Scotland (2005-2007) as a senior house officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and came to Birmingham to complete an accelerated medical degree, graduating in 2010 first in his class. He was awarded the Sir Arthur Thompson Gold Medal and the Chancellor’s Prize, given annually to one graduate entry student deemed to have an outstanding academic record and have contribute the life of the university.

Following graduation, Ross worked as junior doctor in the West Midlands including completing core training in plastic surgery. He then gained a place on the higher training programme in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the West Midlands, where he acted as trainee representative on the trainer’s committee in the region. He completed his exit Fellowship examinations in 2017 and specialty training in 2018 with two nationally awarded sub-specialty training fellowships in cosmetic surgery (Nottingham) and skin cancer (Leeds).

In 2018 Ross was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust with subspecialty interests in TMJ surgery and skin cancer. He has recently co-edited a forthcoming revision textbook for the FRCS(OMFS) clinical examination and is a contributing editor to eFACE, an online learning resource for junior trainees in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Research

Ross has been actively involved in pedagogical research during his time as a higher trainee. His Masters dissertation focused on the impact of a virtual learning environment (VLE) for emergency department staff in dealing with maxillofacial emergencies. Following on from this he has published research into “flipped classrooms” for postgraduate training of dental core trainees in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Other areas of interest include designing a novel classification system for extended temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacements, outcomes reporting in prosthetic joint replacements and examining disparities in training opportunities and experience in TMJ surgery nationally.
