Andrea E. Cavanna is Honorary Reader in Neuropsychiatry and Consultant in Behavioural Neurology at the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation NHS Trust. He is also Deputy Director for the MSc in Clinical Neuropsychiatry.

Andrea E. Cavanna is Consultant in Behavioural Neurology at the Department of Neuropsychiatry, National Centre for Mental Health, Birmingham (United Kingdom), Honorary Reader in Neuropsychiatry at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom), Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Neurology, University College London (United Kingdom), and Visiting Professor in Neuropsychiatry at University of Pavia (Italy).

He received his MBChB and MD from the University of Turin (Italy), completed his specialty training in Neurology at Amedeo Avogadro University, Novara (Italy) and was awarded his PhD in Clinical Neurology from University College London. Since 2008 he is Lead Consultant for the specialist Tourette syndrome clinic at the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. He is currently Deputy Director for the MSc in Clinical Neuropsychiatry at University of Birmingham. He has published over 200 international peer-reviewed articles in the fields of behavioural neurology and neuropsychiatry, with special focus on the behavioural aspects of epilepsy and Tourette syndrome.

His other research interest is the study of the neural correlates of consciousness in neuropsychiatric/neurodegenerative conditions. In 2010 he received the American Neuropsychiatric Association Career Development Award.

Translational research programme in behavioural neurology and clinical neuropsychiatry, with focus on movement disorders (especially Tourette syndrome) and epilepsy (pharmacology, psychiatric aspects and alterations of consciousness). Organiser of the European Federation of Neuropsychiatry Congress (Florence, 2007). Co-founder of the Michael Trimble Neuropsychiatry Research Group (MTNRG, 2009).
