Biography

“Character in the Professions” online module.

Dr Jameel grew up in Glossop, Derbyshire. Her father was a single-handed GP and she observed the rewarding relationships and intellectual challenge the work entailed. Her late father remains her greatest inspiration. General Practice and the healthcare environments are quite different now. Whilst appreciating the scientific advances in Medicine, Dr Jameel is committed to looking at humanistic innovation in medical education and in practice, all with moral flourishing unpinning the goal.

She completed her undergraduate medical degree at Nottingham University, intercalating with an Immunology project looking at an immunological relationship between Influenza infection and Schizophrenia.

Junior house officer training was completed in Nottingham and Derby, before coming to Birmingham for GP Speciality vocational training. It was at the post CCT stage that Dr Jameel realised her passion for Medical Education. She completed her M.Med Ed at Warwick University. Her dissertation focused on Knowledge Management in Primary care, looking particularly at tacit knowledge exchange (Mindlines).

Her Master’s degree also stimulated an ongoing academic interest in non-face to face consultation communication skills. Dr Jameel has continued to teach telephone consultation skills to GP trainees and established practitioners in the Out-of-hours setting.

In 2006 Dr Jameel became the sole training programme director (TPD) for the North Birmingham GP training scheme. In 2011 Dr Jameel became an Associate Dean for Health Education England working across the West Midlands. Initially with a remit to look after the quality of Foundation training in General Practice placements. Her portfolio increased to being the Associate Dean for GP training in Birmingham and Solihull (2013 -2020). Dr Jameel continues to support HEE being part of a team rolling out a regional Wellbeing programme to support all speciality trainees.

Dr Jameel has worked as an inner-city GP in Birmingham since qualification. She also does GP out of hours sessions and extended hours clinics. She has other voluntary portfolio roles. Dr Jameel is now very immersed in learning and teaching on the subject of Phronesis in Medicine, which aligns very well with her new role at the Medical School leading on Medical Professionalism.

Dr. Jameel has recently participated in a podcast episode of Conversations on Character where she sets out her vision for the Med Ed as guided by her PhD research:
